Alton entertained Tadley in the first round of the league cup on Tuesday night; with current form not going to plan this was going to be a good test of ability and character for the Alton players. Given a no pressured approach and freedom for each player to express himself on the pitch it was going to be a interesting night for Alton.
Tadley started brightly and played some good passing football but the Brewers soon found their feet and started to counter the Tadley attacks, and it just took 11 mins before PA received the ball 20 yards from Tadley Goal went past his defender and drove a powerful shot into the bottom left corner to send the Brewers into a 1-0 lead. Corbett had a chance midway through the first half which he couldn’t convert and Tadley could have levelled the score but a good save at Dan Hills near post prevent them from squaring the tie up before half time.
The second half began with Tadley coming at the Brewers and in like so many games this season Tadley struck early and brought the score back to 1 – 1 within 8 Mins of the kick off. However this then kick started Alton and began to put more pressure on Tadley.
With 20 Mins to go Cav Ferris ran down the left wing cut inside and unleashed a rocketing left foot 20 Yard strike which flew past the Tadley keeper and sent Brewers 2-1 up in the Tie. Then within 2 mins of the retake a cross from the right found Johnny Gray un marked in the box, who’s control was not the best but he was still able to get a shot away which squeezed inside the keepers near post and put the tie 3-1 up to the brewers and took the tie away from Tadley.
Although not a pretty game of football, with a mixture of passing play and long ball play it was the character of the players who battled to get a much needed win under their belts and to send us into round 2 with another home tie against Andover New Street.
