A spirited and determined performance from Alton Town ensured a share of the points on Saturday. Despite dominating the first fifteen minutes and having two opportunities cleared off the line, the Brewers went in 2 - 0 down at half time. Dan Hill cleared a low corner that was swiftly met in a crowed penalty area to put the visitors one up on 26 minutes. Ten minutes later a break on the left and a low cross into the box had the same, seemingly crucial, result.
A super Jonny Gray free kick was then cleared from under the bar and Conor Geoghegan's header came back off the bar as Alton tried to reduce the deficit before the break. It was not to be.
The second half began brightly with Alton pressing and creating pressure on Winchester's defence which was broken on 52 minutes with a swerving strike by Jonny Gray from 20 yards. While Winchester always looked dangerous on the break it was the Brewers who looked the more threatening and were rewarded 10 minutes from the end when Pa Kinteh finished off a sweet move with an even sweeter drive low into the corner of the net.
Further opportunities came to the lively Simba Mlambo but a share of the points was the minimum just reward for an excellent day's effort, determination and, at times, no little skill.
Alton Town: Dan Hill: Lee McGavin, Clive Hibbert, Conor Geoghegan, Ben Choularton: Simba Mlambo, Danny Gray, Ian Humble, Cav Ferris (Stuart Green): Pa Kinteh, Mark Corbett (Ben Roberts).
