A fluke of goal from a cross/shot of a free kick midway through the second half was sufficient to see Alton removed from the Wessex League Cup.

Neither side was quite capable of mastering the frosty pitch and flowing football was, therefore, limited. Alton did have their chances and appeared to be denied a clear opportunity when Dan Gray was brought down just outside the penalty area by the retreating 'last man' North End centre back - only for both Ref and Linesman (Assistant?) to sort of look at each other, shrug and give nothing.

In the final minutes Dan Gray picked up a fumble by the North End keeper to pass into the net only for the aforementioned Linesman (assistant?) to signal Dan having kicked the ball out of the keeper's hands. He who having previously seen nothing had now acquired 20/20 vision and a fertile imagination!
