It was a tale of two penalties in a pulsating FA Vase cup tie at Alton's Bass ground on Saturday.
Wantage's Danny Keen put the visitors ahead on 48 minutes from the spot after David Bostock was tumbled. The Brewer's skipper, Ian Humble, then showed a cool head in the fifth minute of added time to slot home comfortably from the spot after Wantage Captain Tom Rowe handled the ball as he attempted to clear Alton's final onslaught.
The first period of extra-time followed the pattern of the first 90 minutes. Wantage reduced to breakaways, with most of the action happening in the Wantage half. On 100 minutes the lively Mlambo headed against the Wantage bar. Four minutes into the second period of extra-time, Alton took the lead, Mark Clothier having cut in from the left and driving the ball from the edge of the box through a crowd of players to put the Brewers 2 – 1 ahead.
Wantage, to their credit and perhaps in response to their energetic and continuous youthful support, rallied again - but not before Gareth Tucker had saved well as Alton sought to secure the tie. With four minutes of extra time remaining Wantage moved the ball forward for a final attack, the ball breaking to Danny Keen in a crowded six yard box for him to steer it past Atkinson to put the visitors back on level terms.
The tie now moves on to Wantage, the replay being on Tuesday evening (22nd Nov) at Alfredian Park (7.45pm kick-off). Supporters wishing to travel on the team coach should be at Bass for a 5pm departure. (Fare £10 adults, £5 seniors & teens.)
